Pelekas Cultural Society, founded in 1979, has 130 registered members and two main aims: to maintain, preserve and promote local traditions; and, through its performances, to encourage friendship and better understanding between people. The Society’s contribution to the life of Pelekas is acknowledged at both local and regional level. Further afield the Society’s members have performed in many parts of Greece as well as in Cyprus.

The Society is led by a committee of seven members who are elected by the registered membership every three years.

The Society has three choirs (Mixed, Women’s and Children’s) and two dance groups (Adults and Children). The Society also organises:

  • A summer programme of cultural events for both locals and visitors. These include music, dance, theatre, puppet shows and other forms of entertainment.
  • Carnival festivities at the end of Lent.
  • Easter and Christmas events including music and dance.
  • Pelekas Festival on 23 August.
  • Training Courses. (In the past these have included typewriting, painting, printing and dressmaking.)
  • Keeping the local environment clean, tidy and attractive.
  • Annual Excursions - each year the Society organises a five-day educational and recreational excursion outside Corfu and several day-trips to places in Corfu and the nearby Greek mainland. (Past excursions include Israel, Turkey and Cyprus.)

The Society is financed by annual membership fees; merchandise such as calendars; raffles; carol singing; private donations; and grants. Due to the current economic situation in Greece, continued state funding is in doubt.
